Movies Under the Stars

There's no better way to spend a cool summer night in the Mile High City than enjoying a great movie in the great outdoors. Here's a look at some of your options for movies under the stars.

Films on Fillmore
Thursdays at Dusk, July 10-Aug. 21
Cherry Creek North, Denver (Second and Fillmore)
www.cherrycreeknorth.com/viewpage.asp?ID=69
In the mood for dinner and a movie? Cherry Creek North has got you covered. Films on Fillmore is a free outdoor movie series that gives you the option of picking up dinner at one of 50 Cherry Creek North restaurants before the movie or bringing your own picnic to enjoy. Movies begin at dusk with free seating available on a first-come, first-served basis -- so you may want to come early! Last year's events averaged about 1,200 film-lovers for each movie. Attendees are welcome to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnics, however rental chairs are available for $2. This year's schedule includes the most recent James Bond adventure "Casino Royale" (July 10), Kermit and the gang in "The Great Muppet Caper" (Aug. 7) and -- just in time for the Democratic National Convention -- the acclaimed political satire "Wag the Dog" (Aug. 21).

Film On The Rocks
Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison
Various Nights, June 20-Aug. 18 (check website for full schedule)

One of Denver's top summertime events, Film On The Rocks lets you enjoy blockbuster entertainment on the big screen in the incomparable setting of Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The film offerings this year include such favorites as "40 Year Old Virgin" (July 9), "Breakfast Club" (July 24) and "Purple Rain" (Aug. 8), but the great cinema is just the beginning of the fun. Each Film On The Rocks event features an opening comedian or band as well as fun, audience participation contests, like a zombie costume contest for "Shaun of the Dead" (June 30) or a fierce "walkoff" for Ben Stiller's fashion world comedy "Zoolander" (Aug. 18). Check the website for details -- each night is a new and different experience. Doors open at 6 p.m., movies generally start at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the box office on the day of show.
